Changing from alloys to steels - Wylie - 28-09-2012
Iv currently got crap saxo alloys on my van which were on there from the last owner which just ant cut out for putting any load in the back and been in the market for steels with good tyres on for some time now.
Looking on ebay and places,
Can I get away with buying any 14" 4 stub steel rims and make sure they have got a high load tyre on them???
Any help???

Simple answer is 'No'. The wheels on the Berlingo have a unique offset.
Personally I would go for 15" wheels as the overall diameter of those
when fitted with the correct tyres is very close to the OD of 14" wheels.
(Which is why on the later Mk.2 Desire you will find 15" wheels.)

Surely a 14 inch wheel is a 14 inch wheel no matter what the off set is?? The overall diameter is dependent on the tyre profile and the correct load rated tyres are available in a range of profiles...

Yes, you are correct about the diameter.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the offset is CRITICAL !! Offset is the measure from the centre line of the wheel to the mounting face and determines how far the wheel sticks out from the hub. It is expressed as an ET number.
There is very little room to spare inside the rear wheels before the tyre will foul on the bodywork.
When buying a replacement wheel make sure that the ET number is the same as the one you remove - it is stamped into the rim and will probably be in the 15 to 18 range. If you cannot ascertain that the replacement wheel has the same offset then try it for fit. The front has room to spare, the rear does not.
Don't rely on the wheel coming off another vehicle that is quoted as having the same offset - it is not that easy. Try the wheel on your vehicle - it's the only way to be sure.

on the rear wheels a different offset just moves the tyre in or out in relation to the side of the car and the hubs....check the inside of the tyre isnt rubbing on anything.
on the front it also cocks up your steering geometry.. bump steer and self centreing could be effected.
so its best to keep to the proper spec berlingo wheels.
not all 14 inch wheels will have the correct hole spacing.
personally i prefer a 14 inch with a high profile tyre to a 15 and a lower profile even if they are the same overall diameter.
