The problem is that the radio spontaneously and randomly goes full volume and then continues to do so once adjusted. How do I resolve this issue. TIA

Check the airbox is not loose on it's mountings.

What can I do mechanically to my 1.9D to disable it when I go on holiday, On my previous car, a Corsa, I would remove the adjuster on the clutch cable.

If it has not soaked the filter or if there is no great oil consumption then you can ignore it. Do not block crank case breathers, there is a good chance you would blow out an oil seal.
