Have had a better look and the upper part of the door is slightly bent/warped away from the car - consistent with having been forced and so not aligning, so presumably it's stopping the contact being ...

thanks It looks as though someone has tried to force the sliding door at some point as on closer inspection it is not closing fully flush at the top and so suspect this may have damaged the mechanica...
