Or you could just take positive feed from when the ignition is on and take it through a switch to activate a relay, then take the feed off to you heated mirror elements.

Don't do it, drain it out. My dad did it to my mk2 berlingo before I bought it off him and he put £10 of petrol in and the rest derv. It was fine for a week or two then struggled to start and was down...

As above, probably cooked the head gasket and possibly cracked the head now. Get a compression test before you rip the head off. May be a simple fix
