Well I took the plunge and arranged for the local garage in the village to fit a new (auto adjust) cable.
The cable fitted was made by "Frontline" and cost about £45.
The total bill was £80.

Geoff and Ron, when you refer to "the shaft the cable operates", are you referring to the clutch release arm that sticks forwards out of the bellhousing?
