I get what you're saying about the long nose pliers, if you position the legs of the pliers at the base of the bulb and rock the pliers from side to side (twisting your hand left & right) the jaws...

I'm no AC specialist so I don't know about what size ports are for what gas. I do know that the two Renaults I have had with a R134a system only had one port on the system and it was a High Pressure ...

Yeah just squirt a little gas through the tube as you connect it. I can remember that the can of gas I had was 12oz (340g).... the cans I'm seeing now all seem to have less gas, 6oz is quite common. ...

From your description it does sound like the thermostat is letting by. Feel the top hose and if it gets warm before the thermostat would normally open (around 80 -90°C) then the thermostat is letting...

If it's not the connector plug as advised by Multispacer try to tighten the bulb holder.... there will be 2 tabs that are bent down into the hole that the bulb body goes into, these are what the side ...

I suppose the theory behind it will be that by the time the ball joint is knackered the bushes will be past their best so full replacement is the best option. Let us know how you get on. .
