I've just booked it in at a place for £270 which I think is much more reasonable.

I just got quoted the same by my local garage. Rip off, the clutch kit is only £50ish. I'm going to shop around. Worst case scenario I'll try and do it myself but I'd really rather not.

My girlfriend and I can operate them without fault, but there must be a knack because EVERY time we give someone a lift they can't close the doors, one of us has to get out the car and do it for them....

I didn't need to Andre, I just removed the plastic covers which was quite self explanatory.
