Compression test the engine to discount rings but unfortunately there isn't much more that could pressurise the crankcase to that extent. Is it down on power/lumpy idle?

Sorry! Should have updated sooner. On further inspection it appears the cable is actually okay, it's the clutch itself/release bearing or the fork has failed. Will disassemble when I get minute.
