I've not had a sump off, does it have a baffle? Many makes of engines do and I would be concerned that a suction pump may stop at that rather then the lowest part of the sump.

You do get used to it after a while. When I first had a transit van it frightened the life out of me, but after a while I could reverse park into spaces that some Mini owners wouldn't attempt.
