In process of buying a 59 plate L1 850 LX Berlingo van. Can anyone help with what the tax on it will be? Struggling to find out.
Cheers John

Metal back doors. And will I am sure be down as a panel van. Its a new shape one.
Was looking about and it seems like if it is Euro 5 compliant then it will be less than standard rate.
Cant find out how to establish if its Euro 5 compliant!

Better to ask the seller what the cost is or for the logbook details so you can find it out?

Seems that Euro 4 & 5 Compliant vans are cheaper to tax. The V5 reference number will allow you to check online.
Vans registered after 1st March 2001
Type of van VED due (after 1st April 2017)
Euro 4 & Euro 5 compliant vans £140
Fully electric vans £0
All other vans up to 3,500kg vans £240

commercial vehicles are about £240 a year regardless if its a diesel fiesta van or a 4x4 truck
The the gain is on how low the co2 is - thats where your accountant comes into play on how much tax you can claim back on it.

Just read up on that - seems daft that a later more modern diesel engine should suffer higher tax rates

unless there aren't many euro 5 engines that fall into that category?

The Euro 5 thing is only for vans registered in those 2 years.
"Registered between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2010, Euro 5 compliant and not over 3,500kg revenue weight."
All you need to check is the registration date from the logbook.
Everything else is £250.
The reason vans are a flat rate rather than emissions based is because vans like transits tend to fair really badly in the emissions based system because they're large, heavy and not very aerodynamic. So they introduced a flat rate so businesses didn't end up paying a fortune taxing their van fleets. It works quite well for large vans and 4x4's. My 5 door Defender is only £250 a year because it's registered as a van (lacks windows in the boot). If it had windows and seats in the boot and was registered as a car it would be over £500 a year. Smaller vans don't fair so well.
