is it possible to change the starter motor from above as im in my early seventies and lying under cars in this weather is not for me any tips on carrying out the work would helpfull its a 2002 1.9d dw engine thanks in advance

As said it is easily done from above.
Only caution I'd give is to place some cardboard over the radiator to prevent inadvertent damage.
I don't need to say about disconnecting the battery do I ? ... only joking.
Memory tells me it is just a spanner ( battery terminals ) and allen key ( starter bolts ) affair with good access making it a quick and simple job.
