Yeah, I think the hose needs to be twisted slightly. Can't remember which way, though, but no more than 1/2" at the most.
You should see a metal lip also, just outside the plastic pipe. you may need to force a wide flat-bladed screwdriver into the narrow gap and twist to make the end of the hose move. (The metal is part of the hose end)
If the gasket has swelled you'll need to get a new gasket before you can fit a new radiator. It's just not possible to force the hose far enough into the pipe end to lock it with the clip otherwise.
