Measurement request!
#1
Hi everyone, I'm a new member- although I've been lurking around the forum for a little while now.

I currently have a mk2 2008 Berlingo 1.6HDI van with standard 14" steel wheels on... I am in the process of ordering some 15x6j Berlingo steel wheels for banding but before I do so, I wondered if someone who has the 15x6j wheels on their vehicle could possibly have a measure up to tell me roughly how much width I could add to the rim before it would protrude from the front/back arch.

Does that make sense? - I will add a photo if that's a bit confusing!

So you want a photo basically how much you can band before it rubs?

Hi Kokain, I'm ideally after an approximate measurement: of the gap between the outside face of those steel wheels & the outside edge of the wheel arch.

...just so I know how far I can band them before they poke out the side of the van and become illegal.

Do remember that the fronts will need to be narrow enough to allow the wheel to turn without hitting the arch.

Thanks trevor, I'm guessing that the fronts may actually not be worth banding as I currently only have about 1" tollerence on my 14x5.5s.

I'm thinking I could probably get away with 1.5" band on the back but my wheels will be delivered straight to the fabrication company so unfortunately can't measure them on the van first.

this is not very technical..but if it helps. I've a 2008 Multisapce XTR fitted with 215x55x16 tyres as standard. Don't know if 55 is the width for 6j's.. not that technically tyre minded..I assume the body panels are the same for all Belingos its just the trim, suspension mods and gearing which are different. So all i can really say is 55 is a fitted width on some Belingos... regards & best wishes

of course now having read this i realise I've 'got the numbers round the wrong way'.. i should have said 'don't know if 215 is the width for 6j's'.. just shows how little i know @ 5.30 in the morning!!!!

This is the measurement I'm after (front and back) if anyone has 15x6j steels on their van... and a tape measure, a straight edge and a spare 5 mins!

I want to advice you something. You want to band your steel wheels without touching the arches and looking for a mild 1" - 1.5" expansion, which to me is a waste of money at 50gbp per wheel. Especially when 7j sounds the type of standard wheels all cars are running. You are better of hunting for a 7j and worry about the offset for the front mainly. This way you will save yourself 200gbp.

The problem with the 15x6j berlingo wheels is that the offset is around 20-30 compared to the usual cars 40-45 in order to suit the vehicle. As you know when they band wheels they add on the outside of the wheel to achieve the dish. So anything from behind you will still have that gap.
For example if you get a 7j wheel with 45 offset you can band it to 8j-8.5j which is already better in my book dish wise and width wise compared to ending with a 7.5J wheel from a 6J. In reality you can band something to any J you like but it's the arches you have to put effort into.

Just looking at that photo of your 14's I can tell you without measuring 15's are sitting exactly at the same position. I can give you some measurements but it will have to be tomorrow or the day after. Here is some food for thought:

Thanks for the detailed reply Kokain. I have the option of rolling the arches so that would be stage 2 if required.

{edit} I've just been having a muck about with some on line fitment guides / calculators and I see what you mean about going for a bigger offset now.

I've just had a crawl about under my van and the rear wheels look rather close on the inner edge as they are... I'll have to do some more maths to try to workout a suitable offset/width/band combo if I was to try going that route.

I may end up just leaving the fronts standard and banding only the rears - there doesn't seem to be much clearance to play with at the front and as you say adding anything less than a 1" band represents pretty poor value for money.

4x108 15x6j ET between 15-20 steel wheels

The way I see it, no chance! For the front you can band 1" which will bring the wheel flush to the outter edge of the fender. Definitely needs a arch roll. For the rear you can go maximum 1.5" flush with the arch outter edge. Again you need to roll the lip. After this you need to put stretched tyres to clear the edge as it will rub on every bump. However, all of what I said above is irrelevant if you keep the ride height stock. Then you can simply make it look like this with the wheel poking out

Only problem is I wouldnt load the van with actual washing machines etc or even luggage. I think it's totally pointless and waste of money. Should you do it, for the rear I would at least try and source a 4x108 ET40+ 7j wheel which will give you another 1" of band and total of 8j wheel. For the front you can go mental with 1.5" band giving you 7.5j and lots of arch flare. I would not fit ET40 wheels at the front as you will rub on full lock.

My thoughts: I like what you are trying to do. It beats the s**t out some of the most ridiculous wheels I've seen on this forum from 18" to some shiny chromed ugly looking things that cost a bomb. Banded steels is cheaper for what you get, you can run wider tyre, it preserves acceleration still being 15" and of course the weight will equal that of cheap alloys that is hardly aluminium. Never the less doing it to the van is not worth it, it will handle worst, it will still have stupid roll on corners, you will add more weight compared to the OEM 6j wheel, you will still have to run stretched tyres from 185 below, you wont be able to carry stuff, fuel economy will probably get a 2-3 mpg worst Smile, overall I think you are better off spending 150gbp on coilovers. I got the best improvement from those.
