Non starter, key light on dashboard

Hi, I am new to this forum, I have a 2002 Berlingo 1.6 petrol which has developed a problem. Its a right hand drive English car, although now on french plates as I live in France. Onto the problem: Car was fine, drove out for evening, parked went for meal, came out, car turns over but will not start, the key light on dashboard is on, not flashing, no siren noise.
When I returned to the car the next morning, I found a mysterious citroen key on the floor by the pedals, maybe a frenchman had got into the wrong car. Too much Pastis??
I only have one key, and it does not have any buttons on it.
Would really appreciate any ideas, as my French language skills are minimal, so cannot pop in Citroen and ask!!

Ok think I know

The normal key you use is a replacement chances are at somepoint the ignition barrel has been changed.

The key you found on the floor is the old key which also contains the transponder for the immobiliser you need to refix this to the ring around the ignition barrel

If you try to start the car now it should fire

Hi, will have a look at that in the morning, although never known of a second key for this car in 3 years, baffled as to where it came from!!

Also the normal key I use has worked, without problems for years!!

It would have been taped to the ignition barrel usually somewhere out of sight.

It has just worked loose and fell off with age.

The normal key you use will work without problem as longas that key you found is atattached to the barrel, but of course now that it has fell off..........

No problem, anytime.

However you really need to sort yourself out a key which contains a working transponder as at the moment your van is really easy to steal.

I got myself a key cut at timpsons for £50 which was for the key blank, getting the key cut and programming the transponder.

Not exactly cheap but still much cheaper than the dealers!

Get the key that was taped to the ignition and get a new case with a blank blade cut for that. Then you can transfer the innards from that to the new case and will only cost a couple of quid
