I don't think I ever undone mine. I just worked around it. The design is stupid I agree but if I were you I wouldn't touch it, being plastic, as it will probably brake and no longer will have anything. To be honest the hoses are more than capable of holding the fuel filter weight. I did mine last year, if you want I can take a picture while the car is in the air.

There is no way that my filter will come out as the strap is holding it very tight. There seems to be a little slot where a special tool goes to undo it or would a flat head screw driver suffice

Hi PitPan,
Haynes says (and photo shows) "Release the tab of the restraining strap and slide filter out of its housing". Perhaps it needs some release fluid to free it. I suppose if you are renewing the filter anyway a little gentle persuasion won't hurt as long as you don't damage the bracket.
