Spare wheel again

Hi - new member Mike here.

Just bought an 07 Partner Escapade - and whilst checking at home discovered the spare wheel was missing!!

Previous owner was also at a loss as to why - various services and MOT's hadn't mentioned the fact!!

Just managed to find someone on Ebay selling some brand new wheels, with unused Michelin tyres, for £67 - and it arrived today.

Reluctant to fit it underneath without some sort of modification to ensure it can't disappear again - anyone come up with a cunning plan?

My spare wheel is undone via a bolt in the boot floor making it difficult to nick without cutting the cage.

If yours is the same then I wouldnt be trusting what the previous owner says....

FYI if memory serves the spare wheel is not checked as part of the mot and its difficult to service a spare tyre that isnt there...

Dunno about difficult to remove - saw a thread on here concerning about 5 people have had theirs stolen!! Could the wire cage be bent somehow to nick the wheel?

Citroen do a 'kit' (or used to) which involves you drilling a hole in the boot floor which passes through to a big metal plate under the spare and screws into it, it can only be undone from inside the car then. The downside is that you end up with a large bolt head sticking up in the boot area which is unsightly and a dam nuisance.

This is not true you do not need to cut the cage to remove it, but I am not saying how you do it on here.

Years ago a friend of mine got a Berlingo as a disability car and three days after they got it the spare wheel disappeared. It was in a supermarket car park in broad daylight and the thieves left the carrier down or they would never have known till they needed it. Our spare wheel was flat and rusted in solid when I got the car, a right pain to free it off as well and then had to get it repaired. You can jack the carrier up with a scissor jack to free it from the hanger if it's stuck.

Just had a brainwave - I assume they get stolen because the wire frame can be pushed up enough to release it from that hooked retaining plate?

What if I drilled the plate, and put a padlock through the hole, and around the frame - then covered it with grease so it shouldn't rust?

Any input on this cunning plan, please?

This is not true you do not need to cut the cage to remove it, but I am not saying how you do it on here.
