1.9D 142k time to change or keep?
#1
hi ,
ive got a 2003 1.9 berlingo and the mileage is getting high so im in two minds were i should part ex it while its still running ok?

ive had it for 3 and half years and it had 105k on it when i got it,
since then its had a new clutch, cambelt, waterpump and alternator and also a new battery :p
its a brilliant van and apart from those parts its never let me down runs great on the motorway too,
due to work im going to be doing between 300 and 500 miles a week now so had the idea of getting a newer one with less miles etc,

should a change it now or will i be able to get alot more miles out of it with out it starting to cost me money if parts need changing?

The 1.9d is a very reliable unit and from what you have said I wouldn't be considering changing it until its hit 200k but that's just me.

On the other side of the coin , the mpg isn't great and a hdi engine would be a better choice for doing lots of miles.

Have you done some maths regarding this? Taking into account cost of fuel, maintenance etc etc on your current van versus cost of new van, maintenance , fuel cost etc

the mpg isnt too bad on this , i filled the tank up and done 400 miles with still a 1/4 tank left , mostly motorway miles,
like i say its a great little van runs as good as when i bought it
was looking at a 1.6 hdi but seem to be mixed views on this engine ?

The 1.9d is easily capable of doing a lot more miles than that without issue.

Other than servicing all you are likely to meet are new tyres and exhaust sections but then you could easily have to spend on these with a new vehicle. The above are cheap and easy to replace at home if you can do your own work.

You have the advantage of knowing the vehicle you already own which is worth much peace of mind so unless you fancy a change for the sake of it or are ashamed of it in front of the neighbours then it would make sense to keep it.

My advice, for what it's worth,is to keep it.It's got that mileage again if well maintained & driven.Your depreciation is virtually Zero as opposed to a new/later van.As Geoff says,it's the devil you know.:thumbsup:Confusedalut:

If your happy with your mpg then I see no reason to change it.

The 1.6 hdi has to regularly and well serviced if not you can start kissing turbos goodbye, other than that its a good little engine.
