Driveshaft Removal Problem. Please Help!!!!
#1
Hi All

Im a newbie on here so please be gentle with me.

I am attempting to do the clutch on my neighbours van, a 1.9D Berlingo Van (2003) and all was going great till I had to remove the o/s driveshaft.

I have spent 4 hours trying to remove it but it just wont budge. The n/s one literally fell out. It is the longer driveshaft that is split into 2 sections that is the problem.

It basically goes through a tie rod/mount which has a bearing in it. The bearing appears to be siezed in here! I have slackened off the two 11mm headed bolts and turned them 90 degrees so as the bearing will clear it but it made no difference.

Exasperated I thought I would remove the entire mount and go from there, but as the solid shaft is going straight in the gearbox and the mount is located by dowels it makes it impossible to remove said mount without stuffing the gearbox.

Please tell me someone has come across this problem before as im completely and utterly at the end of my tether.

All suggestions welcome (Inc dynamite!!!!)

Thanks People

Wayne

Hi, make sure that the bolts are in exactly the correct position otherwise it is a right bugger to release I know that sounds obvious but you need to get your head and a torch right in to see. Mine was tricky too! Have you freed the d/s from the hub/strut assembly?

Hi

Thanks for the reply. Yes it is completely removed from the hub assembly and im sure the screws were in the right place.

I think im going to have to remove the screws completely and just douse it in wd40 and just percivere with it.

Is this not that common a fault then and does the bearing usually just slide out of its mounting?

Thanks

Wayne

i know these won't loosen the driveshaft for you but the torque settings may help on refitting..:-)

I don't know if its particularly common 'problem'. Just one of those naughty extra distractions you don't really need. I did clean it up and copper slip the outer surface when I refitted it! Any joy yet?

Well, I got back to it this morning with a fresh head and renewed hope in my heart, and after an hour and a half I just wanted to cry! I had made no progress whatsoever!

My method to was to completely remove the outer half of the driveshaft and then using a balljoint splitting fork (held by molegrips), smack merry hell out of the driveshaft, all to no avail!

In the end I decided to see if I could instead get the gearbox to move away from the driveshaft, which with a bit of jiggery pokery I managed to do (praise the lord!). I then quite easily managed to remove the mount with the driveshaft in situ. Once on the workbench I manged to remove a very knackered and siezed bearing.

I then came to fit the new clutch, and its the wrong flipping one!!! So the job is now on hold till probably Thursday due to my work commitments.

But thanks very much people for all your help, its very much appriciated!

Ah the wrong clutch, that happened to me too. Well not so much the wrong clutch but wrong release bearing which was the cause of all my initial woe. Really great idea to manufacture a release bearing partly from plastic which melts. Cheers Valeo! W anchors! Best of luck!
