Mk2 Instrument display

My instrument display has a lighting fault. It's been like it for the last 4 years but is now starting to get to me :brickwall:, so thought I'd tap the collective wisdom and see what can be done.

Essentially, the right hand side of the display (speedo and temp gauge) stays dim, no matter what is done with the rheostat - or whatever it is. The left side (tacho and fuel gauge) increases and dims as it should.

I've had the thing apart and can't see anything obviously wrong. Bearing in mind it is all PCB's and soldered in LED's and I'm not electronically minded.

So then, over to you..............

Just giving this a bump in case somebody missed it over the weekend who may know the answer.

Assuming that you want to repair the existing unit the you will have to find an independent
electronics engineer. Your local Ham Radio club would be a good place to start!
This can't be too complicated to fault find as all of the instrument lighting will be on the
same circuit. If you were near me I'd take a look at it for you. Initially I'd be looking for a
short circuit on the relevant PCB tracks.
Hope you can get it sorted out.

Looking at this thread http://www.berlingoforum.co.uk/showthread.php?tid=54 it looks like the bulbs are very simple to change (unless of course you have a different type of display)

Chris, I believe CoCo is referring to the the dimmable lighting behind the speedo and temperature gauge rather than the multi-function display in the centre of the dash.
It is strange that adjusting the potentiometer does nothing to that part of the backlighting. It may be that a twin ganged pot. is used and one 'side' of it has a fault.
All this of course is conjecture and if the car was not bought new then all sorts of attempted repairs may be causing the problem.

The Multi Function Display is the same, but the instrument panel doesn't use bulbs, it has LED's which are soldered into the printed circuit board. The ones on the "dim side" do light up, but only on the dimmest setting which makes them difficult to read particularly in dull conditions. Not to mention it looking odd.

I'm not the worlds best with electronics and even replacing the LED's would present a challenge with my old soldering iron and skill level when using it.

I'm reluctant to buy a replacement display if mine can be rectified more cheaply.
