under engine cover on van

Have an 07 1.6 van shown as 92 bhp. Its the first time I've owned a Berlingo
and this one seems to be missing both engine covers. Could anyone tell me please if these were fitted as standard to the vans, and if they are in anyway an essential items or a b nuisance and how the hell do they attach.
