[Steering & Suspension] Notchy steering

Hello folks,could anyone help me please.Bought a 53 plate berlingo 1.9d tod and driving it home the steering when taking bends or turns felt notchy,   Thankyou,Alan

You'll have to give more information or get nowt but guesses, drive shaft joint-cv- etc, any other symptons? is it just turning one way? get any noise, tyres no lumps on or soft, does it do it stationary and so on, sounds scary so best advice is get it looked at immediately and quoted on -any garage should know with a quick road test.

Just a thought, mine was making same kind of noise when turning ,turned out to be the spring strut bearing ,which cost about eleven pounds each side plus fitting ,but I fitted it myself.If you do that be very careful when compressing the spring.

Could be steering column bottom universal joint but without more info its hard to diagnose. My 2ltr HDi developed knotty steering and it was a dry U/J. I sprayed it with WD40 and it cured it but a few months later the joint finally succumbed to wear and tear and i had to change the shaft (not too difficult).
Your problem could have any number of causes so more info needed. As a first port of call Id try jacking up the vehicle so both wheels off ground (and on axle stands for safety). Turn steering wheel from side to side full lock both ways and get someone to assist by looking and listenening to steering while you do it. You can check all tyres while at it too and feel for any play on any bearings and joints etc.

If the PAS fluid is darker than red I advise changing it.See thread referring to it.

  Too much toe in will make these symptoms worse, setting toe in to the minimum helps .... P.S.old PS oil is a big culprit

i too am experiencing the same problem ,you give the car a turning circle, and the wheels are trying to come out of the turn,then they go back into the turn,very minutely but you can feel it,thought the studs had come loose,all were tight,so i thought it could be wheel alignment,anyway will check all explanations, thanks GWYN

agree about toe in. I bought a van, 112,000 miles, and they'd changed all the tyres. After a few hundred miles the steering was like a gym workout. Very heavy to move then it suddenly moves too far!

Garage was useless, I checked (and fixed) the toe-in and it's like a new van. Feathered edge on the front tyre implies toe in excess. Outside of tyre = toe in; inside of tyre = toe out. As a new tyre wears, the symptoms get worse (better grip on the edge of the tyre.
