[Steering & Suspension] Back Axle - compatibility
#1
Got the dreaded back axle blues, with one rear wheel pointing at an odd angle. I can see the bearings have collapsed where the trailing arm joins to the axle. Its a Mk1 2002 model, drum brakes and non abs, ex forestry commission van.

Am I right that MK1 and Mk2 rear axles are the same? Berlingo and Partner the same also? Are any of the car axles a straight swap.. Xsara or ZX maybe?

Just trying to find the most suitable from the selection at the breakers yard..

I did this job a couple of years ago, same van berlingo mk 1 , got the replacement axle complete £100 off a partner, not sure if it was a mk1 or 2 but it fits. Trolley jack 2 axle stands, the only thing to be wary of is the brake manifold, if the brake nuts aren't lined up propely you can strip the threads, which i did, but luckily the scrap one came with one, so saved myself a lot of beer, yeah there aluminium so take yer time and have fun.

Any axle from a mk1 or mk2 Citroen or Peugeot will fit your van.

However I would advise against getting one from a breakers as it will only probably last a couple of months unless your planning to sack it off shortly.

A recon axle is a much better investment in my opinion

Thanks for the replies. I managed to get an axle off an ultra low mileage and late ish model airport van for £80 which seemed a fair gamble vs £350 for a recon one.

The car axles may be compatible if anyone is really struggling to find a good one:

The axle swap looks straight forward. The T50 torx bolts were seized up with rust, but freed off with a bit of work.

One minor thing I am struggling with is how to remove the hand brake cable from the wheel unit. Its a plastic clip with 2 little wings that need compressing to allow it to be pushed out the back of the brake unit. Have fiddled about this afternoon with no success. Anyone any tips?

I would advise you to put some grease nipples on the axle to prolong bearing life.
I can post some pic where to put them If you want...
