[Steering & Suspension] How to fit grease nipple on rear axle berlingo
#1
Process is really straight forward buy grease nipple (6 or 8 mm)

Drill a hole with 5.5mm or 7.5mm like in the picture. Go slow. When you drill
trough first casing you will get to white plastic sleeve. Be sure to drill that plastic also.

Go really slow until you get to hard stuff. That hard stuff is axle. Then stop.
Fit the nipple and apply grease. Lots of grease.
The problem is that you have to fill entire axle and rear arm of grease that is about 3-4 kg.
Or you can put some grease every 5-10 thousand kmh. When you apply grease,
the grease will travel through hole and go where it is easier to go. Not where you would like it to go.
You would like it to go to the bearing that is why you need to fill everything with grease so you
can force the grease to go to every hole inside, and finally to the bearing.
But again 4kg of grease is a lot cheaper than changing the whole rear axle.

EDIT: real pic from my blingo

Here is the video where you can see inside rear arms and rear bearing.

Hi Brajomobil have you still got the pictures from your original thread as I am thinking of putting some grease nipples in the axle and wanted a rough idea where to drill the holes.
Are we there yet????? Huh

Just thinking here. . .

If you drill through the white plastic spacer tube that is in the housing you should only be pumping grease between the axle pin and the spacer when you pump it in?

As the gap between the spacer tube and the axle pin isn't very much, it shouldn't take a lot of grease to fill the space and once full the grease should start to enter the bearings as you pump it in.

I'm not sure if the plastic spacer is free to turn within the housing so a long grease nipple that went into the hole that was drilled into it would be advantageous as this would stop any movement of the spacer tube and make sure that the grease will always go between the spacer and the axle pin.

Any thoughts?

Sorry for late answer I was on loooong vacation  Smile . I had the same doubts but I was unable to find really good inside pictures
And I didn't want to disassemble and look around. So went on the first option , drill thru , and fill everything with grease.
Look closely at the pic and you will see that grease is "coming" out from end where bearing is. That means it is doing it's job.

Yeah I can see that the grease is getting to the bearings, you can see that the arm looks greasy.

But for future reference.....

Here is a picture of the bearings and the plastic spacer in the trailing arm.

The plastic spacer is a tight fit into the trailing arm so I don't think it will move once it is in place. The gap between the plastic spacer and the axle pin is small, only about 2mm all round.

The plastic spacer is about 10mm short of touching the bearings at each end, however there is a machined surface at each end of the trailing arm tube where the bearings sit and this is about 35mm, so the plastic spacer sits well onto this machined area and is a tight fit on the surface.

If a slightly longer than standard grease nipple is used and screwed into the arm until it contacts the hole that has been drilled through the plastic spacer the grease that is pumped in will go directly between the spacer and the axle pin, the grease will then fill the small 2mm void between the spacer and axle pin and then go directly into the bearings, there will be no grease going into the trailing arm so you would only need to use a small amount of grease.  Wink

Could you please link me to somewhere where I could buy suitable grease nipples?

Just got a 2005 2.0 HDI Berlingo and it's got a negative camber on the back left wheel with a creak coming from there whenever I set off. I'm currently psyching myself up to replace the trailing arm bearing (haven't done much car maintenance before but I'm generally good at fixing things and I like to learn!) and might as well add some grease nipples while I'm at it, seems like a good idea.

Just search for "long grease nipple" on Google or ebay.

If you fitted the grease nipple when the trailing arm was off the axle pin you could see how far you would have to screw it in until it came through the plastic spacer.

If fitting the nipple whilst the arm is on the axle it would be a case of either measuring or screwing in the nipple until it contacted the axle pin then backing it out a turn or so.

If you're considering stripping down your axle I would advise you to watch a few youtube videos to see what the job entails as it can be quite tricky.
