indicators dont always work

Hi could any one please help solve this?. The indicators on my mk1 1997 berlingo work fine most of the time then then suddenly stop every now and then. When this happens I also get nothing on the hazard swith. Can sometimes get them back by really forcing the indicator stalk down hard but not all the time. Any help much appreciated.
