The engine management light comes on intermittently and citroen dealer diagnosis is turbo malfunction. The estimated bill is £900 .However my local garage diagnosis is EGR valve. Also the oil light and STOP sign is flashing. Is the engine dead or oil pump problem etc. Can Anyone help.

Its either spinning or it isn't

Errrr....not quite that simple, be lovely if it was though!
A clogged CAT will cause the turbo not to work very well!!

I would tend to go with my local garage on this. They are likely to start with the least expensive possible problem and work through the alternatives thoroughly.
I don't trust main dealers at all....their diagnosis is frequently
well off target and I've had disagreements with VAG and Volvo Dealerships over the years and I've proved them to be either incompetent or economical with the truth.

One of the most common turbo-killers is the boy racer who simply must blip the throttle before switching off. Let the motor idle for 20 seconds before switching off.

Recon turbos can be obtained at reasonable prices so although expensive not quite as painful.

The 1.6 hdi engines can suffer turbo failure due to poor servicing and incorrect oil been used.
I have always used mobil 1 5w 30 and i always change oil and filter every 9kmls not the 12k mls as recommended.

What milage is on your berlingo..??
What oil was used and what were the service intervals..??

A clogged CAT is going to cause more issues besides your turbo not working properly.

What i meant was a turbos job is to spin, so if it malfunctions then to me its not working, as in not spinning.

A clogged cat would cause problems in a normally aspirated too.

The 1.6 Hdi has done 70000 miles. The turbo is definitely knackered. Inside the turbo is dry as a bone, no oil in sight. Can you buy a kit to refurbish the turbo rather than buying an exchange. What can cause lack of oil. Need to sort oil problem before exchanging turbo etc. Can anyone help? The problem first started last month within the 3 year warrantee but citroen refused to help because I had it serviced by local garage.

I thought that this had been resolved and that we are not tied to manufacturers for servicing to maintain the Warranty. As long as they are VAT registered and use genuine parts

The garage is not vat registered and I only have hand written receipts.

Find out what oil he's been putting in the engine and if he'll tell you, what brand of oil filter he's been using. Turbos don't run dry with no reason. A build up of sludge in the oilways would be my first suspicion. Modern turbo-diesels are finicky bloomin' things and servicing must be done by the book. No longer can privateers claim that because they've been servicing engines for 30 years they can still apply all of that old knowledge and it's relevant.

A good friend of mine who is a fine multi disciplined engineer owns a Shelby GT500 and he got quite a shock when he found that the importer who he had trusted to carry out the servicing puts the same oil in all of the cars he sells, be it a Merc or Hummer or Lambo! I saved you a lot of money on oil Sir, says the importer to which my friend retorts "How keen are you to buy me a new engine?.....They're only £17000!"

The moral of this long tale is that whoever does the servicing on your pride and joy must be competent.

PS...Can you imagine putting the wrong oil in this??:eek:
