[Engine] Engine knock noises

My mk1  1.9d van had engine start rattling/knocking worse after driving about a couple of miles was ok at first then this noise appeared, engine was slightly laboured, no warning lights on, got home parked up , popped bonnet rubber smell from front engine , engine still knocking louder. turned her off then restarted and all went quiet and was running as normal - strange .....anyone got any ideas or experienced this??? not gonna use her just in case its belt related so im deffo putting a new belt on...any advise would be great thanks.

Sound's like one of you pulley is starting go cease up and the belt going over it is getting hot and burning so don't take any chances don't run the engine till you find it

If it was fine when you re-started the motor, I'd guess that you may have a loose or worn belt.
I'd get it sorted asap.
