Cold start problem
#1
Hi to you all, thanks for excepting me as a member. I have this cold start problem with my 2004 1.9 Berlingo, it started really when we had a trip to Andorra in August, after an overnight stop at an hotel up in the mountains it did`nt want to start, so I coasted downhill to fire it up, after that its been bad to start when cold ,its ok once warm no problem. I have just serviced it this week, renewed the fuel filter and o rings, primed up like it says in the haynes manual!, fitted a new set of NGK glow plugs, checked for leaks by raising the rear of the car to see if any pipes weeping, battery fully charged, is there any easy way to bleed the system, I suspect I`ve still got air in the system?, also is there a none return valve or filter from the tank? any help would be grateful, (Its minus 4 in the mornings here in s/w of France at moment, so my garage is a little nippy too!!). kind regards hunnsy

Hi hunnsy welcome to the forum, how many miles has your motor got on it as the 1.9 tend to close up the valve clearances when you get over 100,000 making them hard to start when its stone cold. Once warm they are fine for the rest of the day. There are various threads on the forum about it.
Are we there yet????? Huh

Thanks for the info Tomcat, Its done 104000, so it could be the problem you think?. have checked voltage to glow plugs 11.9v, and stays for 36secs, does that sound right?. Will see if I can find the threads for this work, thanks again

Is this really the case? I've had 20 years experiencing of dealing with 1.9s and had loads over 100k, some well over 200k and have never experienced this problem. I've never seen it mentioned on other French car forums either, only here..

I don't think that the tappets would cause problems when up in the mountains, they may be in need of adjustment but when back at nearly sea level they should be OK if it was starting OK before  you went mountaineering.

There is a atmospheric pressure sensor built into the ECU which works with the fuel pump but never heard of problems with that before (thinking  mountains again )   Huh

The bleeder pump/hand primer  has non return valve built in,  try pumping it with the bleeder pipe on the fuel filter top off.

Try pumping with the ignition on before starting to see if that helps.

Hi Brodfather, thanks for the suggestions, the engine was no problem starting prior to mountaineering!! I have noticed a slight leak around the primer plunger after several priming sessions, will try with the bleeder pipe off. I dont suppose there is any way to replace the internals of the primer?, it looks like its integrated with the filter housing, you dont think there is anything needs resetting with the ECU? anyhow thanks again, will try your suggestions, have a nice w/e.
