2.2 starter motor on a 2.0 HDI
#1
Hi,

I've got a bit of a dodgy starter on my 2.0 RHY, it should come with a 1.7 KW unit, there are also 1.4 KW units available and I'm guessing it's been changed to that at some point as it takes ages to start even with a good battery.
I'm planning to replace it and thought I may as well go bigger and better.

I've found that the 2.2 HDI 4HX engine comes with a 2.3 KW starter, this should start it a lot faster.

My question is, has anybody tried this, will it bolt straight on?

The starter on the eBay link seems popular.

I've just fitted one this afternoon. Unbelievable difference.

Thanks, it looks like the seller says it will fit the 2.2 so I would assume a 2.2 starter would fit on the 2.0.

So to update, I went for the uprated starter off of ebay after a starter motor specialist told me the 2.2 starter had a bigger body and wouldn't fit.
The uprated starter is much bigger (so possibly the 2.2 starter), and did require a few tweaks to the wiring to get it all connected up.

It does start so fast now which is exactly what I was after. So overall a worth while mod/upgrade from the tiny 1.4Kw unit I had on there.

i done the same job (fitted the heavy duty starter ) a while ago and the differance is unbelivable one of the best jobs so far. it now starts instantly where as before it was slow starting and always chufed out a bit of smoke. anyone looking for a starter make sure you fit one of these heavy duty jobbies YOU WONT BE DISAPOINTED!!!!

Just be aware that you'll need to replace the connector for the earth (small wire) as it's originally a ring connector and the new starter has a spade connector. I simply got a short length of wire, crimped the spade on one end and a ring the same size as the original ring connector to the other end of my short wire , then used a short bolt to bolt the two rings together and shrink-wrapped the lot. Fits a treat.

Also be aware the connector on the live for the starter - the thick wire will foul the new starter. I just snipped the corners off the big connector with tin snips. Job done.

Job took 10 mins. You don't need to drain the diesel filter - it'll flip up and over out the way and not leak. I did it without removing the airbox too.
