[Engine] Engine rattling and smell of fuel

Hi All
My 1.4 2005 Petrol has suddenly taken a turn for the worse! It sounds as though someone has threw a bag of spanners into the engine and it is making a huge racket, also there is a strong smell of fuel in the cab. It has been a bit poor at starting recently and has been stalling when cold and I was beginning to think that the Injectors or Injector Seals may need replaced which might explain the smell in the cab but does anyone have any idea if the rattling like a tractor engine might be related and what it could be. An additional point that may be relevant is that there has been quite a bit of soot coming out of the exhaust when I rev the engine

Check its not just a spark plug or injector come loose.

Thanks, I'll have a look when I get back tonight. I had the plugs out at the weekend to check them so it's a possibility. Can't find my Haines manual though, can you point me in the direction of the injectors?
