Spring and metal bar left of clutch pedal

Really crazy question I suppose, but does anyone have any idea what the little metal bar is to the left of the clutch pedal. It has a spring on the back, but just seems to push down into the carpet ! What is it ??? PLEASE [Image: undecided.png]

hi jed my clutch pedal has just fallen to the floor I have berlingo mutispace 1.9 diesel 2004 model .cant see inside spring but it feels like a round bar has snapped rendering clutch useless car drives and brakes normally  any ideas what is problem

Clutch cable snapped perhaps ?

Ignore the spring affair in the picture as the clutch WILL work without it fitted.
