Berlingo wont start after fuel pump removed

Hi, I've got an 04 plate berlingo, and was running a bit hit and miss, sometimes would run fine all day and the i would get the occaisonal flat spot, but was quite noisey up top, so took it in to be looked at, they said due to millage should start with a new timing belt, after this was replaced, van ran really rough, and wouldn.t run under load and kept cutting out, so mechanic said needed new fuel pump.
So took old pump to deisel specialist, said in most cases its fuel solenoid, so this got replaced, but now berlingo won't start at all been to 2 mechanics and still no further, both say there,s only a trickle of fuel at injector, does this mean the pump does need replacing. but the diesel specialist said if the van was running before, it should be running as before with the new timing belt fitted.

any help on this would be greatfully appreciated.

Sounds like you're being fed a pile of poo! Don't know what model you have but on the 1.9d there is a procedure whereby the pulley gears have to be loosened and rotated to ensure slack is removed when refitting the timing belt. Additionally the belt tension should be checked by use of the 'seems' tool which is a specific electronic device for measuring belt tension in 'seem' units. There is no reason that the vehicle should run differently after a belt change unless it has been fitted incorrectly. i.e. missed a tooth or the pump pulley gear not slackened and rotated correctly. If there is an underlying fault it should be the same as when you took it to the garage for the belt change. If the timing is out i.e advanced or retarded you may find it struggles under load. In my experience fuel injection pumps normally fail completely, its unusual for them to 'play' about first. I'd be looking to get the timing checked before anything else!

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated, could you explain more about the procedue for setting up the full pump so i can pass this on to my mechanic. so would this explain the fuel delivery problem, as the van started after timing belt was replaced (although ran very rough), but not after fuel pump was removed and refitted.

Dont suppose you know anyone in the sheffield / barnsley area who is able to do this for me.
