hi all,
i have a 2003/4 berlingo 2.0 hdi and a while ago i noticed a whirring noise that occurs after engine is switched off, sounds like a small electric motor or pump and it lasts a few mins before fading.
it continues even if battery disconnected.
i noticed it again today after it wouldn't start after i changed fuel filter.
my berlingo does not have fuel pump in tank as it has the pressure bulb near filter.
any ideas what it is?
thanks.

Not sure if you will find answer here- think yours is an M59 not M49, and 2.0hdi wasn't fitted to M49 (correct me if wrong...)
Alternatively it's not the cooling fan is it?

Mine does that, I was told it's cool, it's just the cooling system cooling down.

If it's the electric radiator fan "running on", I'd investigate whether the radiator matrix is blocked with dead insects and other debris, thus making your van run hot. Could be a faulty water temperature switch for the fan as well.

I had a new 2.0Hdi in 2003 and it had exactly the some sound, I wondered if it was the headlight motors, never did find out what it was but I never had any problems either.

My 1.9 M59 does that as well, with engine off I pumped the brake pedal a couple of times and the noise stopped so probably the servo unit.
