The stuff that VW's being done for is all invisible gas, not soot.  It's the Nitrogen Oxide that's the problem - it often results from not burning enough fuel.  So VW's fixed firmware may actually require the engine to burn more fuel to reduce the NOx emissions.  So their customers will be delighted.

and in particular the Nitrogen Dioxides that are most harmful to our health.  I believe you are correct about using more fuel, I read an article a while ago, I think it was scania truck engines, they were injecting 6 or 7 times on the compression stroke then a further injection after firing on the down stroke, I understood the reason for final injection was to create a hotter burn to lower NOx.  I guess it is this type of thing the engine mappers remove and improve fuel economy. It will be interesting to find out what exactly VW have been doing.  My wife has a Yeti and it seems quite likely the engine may be one of the affected, I hope any software upgrade does not spoil its astonishingly good mpg figures.

the higher temperatures are all important in lowering these harmful pollutants, this is part of the reason for the much hated EGR valve, when the engine is idling or not working hard the egr valve sends the exhaust fumes back through the engine to give it another burn and reduce pollution - sadly some people remove this valve in a bid for cleaner engine oil and a tiny bit better economy, little do they realise they are poisoning everyone nearby with possible serious consequences for asthmatics.

I am very interested in all this as I bought a new 2014 Bling VTR with a 90 ESG Airdream engine. It's brilliant, by far the best car I've ever had, but what do others think about some of the knee-jerk reactions being aired about banning all diesels from London (thanks Boris) and increasing the current £30 car tax up to £500. There's even talk of a scrappage scheme to get diesels off the roads. I'm no technician, and am grateful for the explanation given as to how the DPF thingy works, but it won't be long before driving any diesel will be likened to having BO (remember the old Lifebouy soap adverts on TV?). I just hope this VW thing wasn't going on at Citroen; could that be the reason why another forum thread reported dealers not accepting orders for new Berlingos?

The road fund licence is indeed changing in 2017 but the changes won't be retrospective, so whatever band your vehicle falls into now will remain.
