52 plate 1.9 van gear stick

Hi, i hope i'm on the right thread, i've noticed that when i put the gearbox in 2nd, the stick touches the passenger seat, while messing about i found that while still in gear i could pull the stick toward me to it's proper position, there is a lot of movement in it, it's been up on a lift with the mechanic checking all mountings but nothing has come loose, the linkage has been checked with nothing out of place, even though i can get all gears, there seems to be a problem i hope doesn't get worse, any ideas please. thank you
