Camshaft / Oil Seal
#1
Having had the camshaft out on my 1.9D today I thought I'd share an observation that may help someone, maybe.

When an oil seal runs on a part ( in this case a camshaft ) there will eventually be a wear groove worn in the steel part by the rubber oil seal and once this groove gets too large the seal stops working and oil leaks out, a new seal often won't re seal the joint .

Simple cure apart from a new camshaft .... fit a different size seal ...

At the motor factors I was told there were two possible seals for my Berlingo and I took both home, essentially the only difference is the width of the seal.

So if you have the wider seal just fit a narrower one and vica versa for the narrow one.

Cortico seal numbers : 7mm wide seal is BASL RDX7 35 - 50 - 7 FPM     8mm wide seal is BASL DRW 35 - 50 - 8 ACM

The other get you out is to obtain a double lip seal, ask at a bearing factors / online.

I guess that not many will need this but you never know if it will be you !

Useful advice. We did like you described, when there was no spare part in a shops to repair our FIAT-124-based cars Smile
One more solution for such worn surfaces is to tighеn the radial spring of the seal. For this we need to find the beginning and the end of the spring
and to screw begining to the end.

PS. It was more than 25 years ago Rolleyes
