[Engine] Loud banging, louder when revved.

Hi, I was driving my 04 berlingo 1.9d yesterday and was going around roundabout and got a strong burning smell and loud banging in the engine that got louder when revved. I parked up and the banging is still there. Oil level is fine, no lights came on the dash and the van seemed to be running fine.
Anyone any idea's what it could be, it sounds like a bearing of some sort, I had a nissan almeria before and the big end bearing had gone, this sounds very similar.

Big end bearings don't bang, they aren't actually that big just called that because they are bigger than the other end (the little end). Check your crank pulley with the auxiliary belt round it and the tensioners.

First of all you must check the belts auxiliary as per ffrenchie above and af course the most important cam belt,when was this last changed ? Have you overfilled the oil,this can cause noise problems in the higher rev range normally you would get some smoke as well as " big end sounding noise "on the 1.9,sounds horrendous ive been there i useally keep my oil level a little low now.!

Its difficult via audio recording to tell but it sounds like you have more than one noise problem there.

The timing may have jumped a few teeth and the valves could be clattering the pistons?

I would not run it up anymore until the timing has been checked. Sounds too noisy to be the damper pulley, however if the pulley breaks up it can cause the timing to jump teeth.

Like i say its difficult to tell but are any of the injectors blowing?

Like mentioned excess smoke? is the engine chuffing badly?

Wipe some oil from the dipstick onto a clean white tissue. Are there any silvery grey particles visible?
It sounds like bottom end to me (although audio recording is no substitute for being there. You can't tell where the sound is coming from on a recording)
