I did the drivers side on mine for MOT. I don't know what the thing is for but I refitted it anyway. It looks like it might be to stop the pulley from hitting the chassis leg if anything serious happens to the pulley or engine mounts.
So where does this bit go then ?

I have always thought its to stop the engine dropping out if the mount fails, as suggested.

is the engine falling out a common problem?

Not related to Berlingo but we had a Clio diesel which I bought as a write off and repaired to put back on the road and I had to remove the front subframe for part of the job. There was a big lump of cast iron bolted under the front valance that I could see no purpose for other than to balance something on the other side. I put it back as I thought it must be there for a reason same as the piece on the Berlingo which seems to be aluminium so not so heavy.
So where does this bit go then ?
