Towing??????
#1
Hi all,

I intend to tow a folding caravan (MAX 900kg) but can't decide which model to go for, either the 120bhp manual or the 100 ETG. The auto appears to have the capacity on paper but wonder if I'd be better off with the more torquey 120?????

Anyone have any views on this?

It depends how far and how often you want to tow.
I do a lot of towing with a fully laden towing vehicle, so I always go for most powerful engine option.
A low powered van would carry and tow the same weight, but I don't want to be constantly playing tunes on the gearbox.

That's exactly what I thought, it was a case of Head says power, Heart says auto. Thanks

Hello hymernova1 welcome to the forum there is another way to look at it think about the clutch when your revering or moving about on a site on the auto will do it a lot better the other thing to look at is the torque of each engine bet there's not a lot in it.

I tow a Sterckeman Starlett which is probably about the same weight with my 2012 Berlingo Auto.  This is rated at 92bhp and it's just about OK. I can keep up with road speed quite well unless there are any long hills which just saps the power.  I see the new Berlingo Autos are rated at 100hp so there's a slight increase there. It depends how much of a hurry you are in - I've rarely had a problem, just once running out of steam overtaking a lorry on the A14 on one of the hills and having to pull back in.  I didn't enjoy that and it got me thinking about a remap which takes it up to about 120bhp with greater torque as well. You will of course have less wind resistance with a folder. It's a great car by the way!

Thanks for all your replies.

I've settled on the 120bhp manual as I will be travelling extensively in Spain, which has some very long and drawn out hills, together with the fact that the 120 has 20% more torque than the auto........shame they don't do a 120 auto like on the C4's Sad
