The reason I asked if it was on 4 cyls at start up was to see if you had mixed the pipes. as it wouldn't run on 4 if you had. Timing should be correct if it was all pinned up properly. If you want to advance it,then turn pump anticlockwise when viewed from belt end
Starting to think you may have an injector or 2 *hosing* or other issue. Try swapping them to eliminate. Don't forget to use new copper washers

Is your engine the XUD ? if so Haynes details the pump set up - DTI required

Dw8 wjy engine I believe.
The tool is the pump timing tool.. Haynes says I need it to adjust the pump timing accurately.
Other tool I was contemplating was a diesel compression tester... Ive got several petrol ones but nothing suiabel for the lingo.
