Just a heads up ..my Berlingo was a pig to start on cold days after reading and reading.people saying change glow plug.relays.ect.but I decided just to put a new starter motor on..bingo fired straight up even on very frosty cold days..just make sure your battery is good.I think this will solve a lot of cold starting problems.....just got to solve a battery draining iissue now  Sad hope this helps others with cold starting problems..

The thing to remember is that folks say to change this and change that but they are not the ones paying !

What people should remember is that ( self ) diagnostics is much cheaper than buying new parts in the hope that it will cure some ill. A few quick test with a multimeter is often all it takes.

I see countless people on the Land Rover Forum I visit ( early vehicles ) repeatedly splashing out on a new battery and then a new / recon starter motor due to a starting issue ( and even then failing to sort it out ! ) without even picking up a meter and spending a max of 10 minutes doing a voltage drop test. This is after offering advice based on experience, nowadays I let them just carry on spending.

Glad you got a result but just wanted to emphasise the benefit of checking before buying.

I had it to auto electriton who told me no power to glow plugs.I tried telling him the glow plug light only comes on when its really cold.he wanted to fit new glow plugs.a separate feed to the glow plugs.ect.I read these engines need a good spin over when its cold.so nothing to to with glow plugs .so decided to put new starter on..and forget new glow plugs and switches and god knows whar else.any way it worked for me..

So the Auto Electrician should be sent back to school ................... paying for poor service is the ultimate insult

and you did a self diagnosis of his abilities, priceless !

Like I said glad you got a result.

Yeah I did and a lot of reading and most of it pointed to a bad starter motor..a common thing on these hdi engines.apparently. he just thought diesel bad cold starting must be glow plugs.any way I told him forget it and went my merry way...I thought £60 for a new starter its worth a try.I didn't want him cutting into wires and putting switches on the dash.and at the end of the day have the same problem...
