Adding another accessory socket in boot area
#21
Does anyone know if the rear power socket and its wiring on a 08 berlingo could handle running a 12v fridge for 8 to 12 hours a day ?
Thanks mark

I hope to install the thing tomorrow, otherwise I won't have the chance until sometime next week. Will be posting back with either success and a photo or back for some advise - I appreciate reading differening views and experiences too and learned a thing or two

I notice the 12v accessory sockets are deactivated when the engine is off which could be a problem Mark

Hi Patch,
Thanks for the quick reply, luckily the fridge / cooler box is 12v / 220v so I can plug into the hotels mains supply. I have to carry and keep medication refrigerated for a family member so as you can imagine it's important to me that it will work and not melt the wiring loom.

Please keep us posted on your progress and the results.

Mark

On a boat, not too unlike a caravan everything is hard wired. Obviously vibration is a key thing when being thrown around and even though everything runs through a circuit breaker, each piece of equipment has its on inline fuse - for example, marine electronics will come with an inline fuse in the box from the factory etc.

Hi Guys,

Fantastic response ! does anyone know if I change the existing socket or add another in a similar fashion to the way patch has suggested if the supply wiring in the loom is up to running the fridge / cooler box ?

Previously in my van (vivaro) I had a similar melt situation to doofer, however it was the Y shaped splitter (so I could charge phone at same time) that melted not the cooler plug or the car wiring or socket. The problem I had was I could not find out either the current draw of the cooler or the rating of the adaptor / socket / supply wiring .
In that case I wired some high amp wire to some high rated sockets direct from the battery which worked well but I have to remember to unplug if stopping for longer that 15 mins due to battery drain, I haven't got around to fitting a ignition live operated relay yet, I'm hoping to avoid running wires through the berlingo & keeping it as standard as possible if I can.

Mark, thinking out loud here. Does your berlingo have the thick white 12v cable inside the boot left side panel? Its meant for if and when a tow bar/wiring is attached. Would that be thick or heavy duty enough? Putting a 40amp maxi fuse in the empty slot 2 position in the engine fuse box makes that thick cable a perm live 12v i understand. Note its permanently live unless it can be adapted with a switch or on ignition.

Hi All,

I found a bit of info that might be useful,
The owners manual states the 12 volt socket is rated at 120w max and my 40 litre cool box is rated at 42w and I think that's the highest rated 12v accessory that I've got, so I think I'm pretty safe with the cool box and a 2.4 amp phone / pad charger plugged in to it just got to find a splitter that won't melt ! or fit a slave socket in a mirror position on the passengers side.
I found one on eBay that I think will do the job.

Or maybe these may be more suitable

Hi Mark, I bought the accessory socket with inline fuse like in your link but from Amazon. Works well.
Do you know how many amps your cooler/fridge want to draw? Perhaps safest would be if it's under 15amps, judging by the size of the wiring going into the power socket.
