[Transmission] Gearbox problem
#1
Hello all  Smile
I have just bought a 59 plate Berlingo 75k on clock and whilst driving it home I noticed that when I put it in 5th gear and accelerate gently the gear stick moves significantly and deceleration causes it move back the other way. If you hold the gear stick you can feel a knocking through the gearstick? There is also quite a lot of play in the stick from left to right but only when in 5th. The gear changes are slick there doesn't appear to be any problem with the gearbox so I was wondering if it's to do with any kind of linkage or the beginning of something more serious thanks in anticipation

This seems odd for a B9 Berlingo as the gearchange stick is mounted through, and moves on a nylon ball stick pivot which is hard-mounted to the dashboard. The connection to the gearbox is via flexible cables. I would check that the stick pivot mounting has not come loose.

It only happens in 5th gear Dodgy is this easy to check or will it require a mechanic to look

Did you test drive it before you bought it.? Could be worn cables?

Yes but it wasn't apparent as not sure I even drove it in 5th

The garage are going to look at it but I was hoping that it could be an easy fix as they can't look at it for 12 days and I'm driving it in between. Was hoping someone has had a similar experience as it took me a long time to find this van

Turns out 5th gear is on its way out. I've had a gearbox specialist drive it he suggests that 5th gear is worn and that it will need replacing along with the hub £400 to fix Confused

I'd get someone else to look at it before you spend any money. It sounds linkage related, and these gearboxes are pretty indestructible. Not sure why he'd need to replace a hub either..

Possibly means the synchro hub on fifth gear but, I find it hard to believe that any movement on the gear lever could translate to a worn fifth gear !!

5th gear syncro is probably the last to wear if you are going to get a problem it is usually 2nd gear syncro - this applies to any manual gearbox and has nothing to do with the linkage its because 2nd is the most abused gear.
