2.0 Hdi Stalling under braking/clutch

Hey folks, first post here.

I purchased a 2002 berlingo 2.0 hdi and when I press the brake pedal or push the clutch in the van stalls especially when cold.

Once warm the problem is still there but it doesn't stall, although the rev drop to under 500 and lights dim if on.

I've replaced the vacuum pump with another one but to no joy.

Any pointers?  I'm pretty handy with spanners.

Hi Lee and welcome.
That is a strange one !! Nothing springs to mind unless its electrical, check around your pedals in case theres a wire trapped or shorting out ?
Failing that get it plugged in to Lexia and see if that shows whats happening.

To me it feels like it loses vacuum or lacks fuel for a second or 2.

I'm going to do a fuel filter change on it

Are you happy your battery is ok and alternator is charging? I'm just thinking that by braking (Vaccum) or dipping the clutch the engine is slowing down and hence the alternator not turning as fast. This is also why the lights may be dimming too.

DaveH is probably on the right track. The BSI is right by your knee with all the wiring that entails.

I think you are looking at it from a petrol engine point of view. No vacuum as such needed like you have with a carb

It's definately vacuum related it has to be, you press the brake the cars comes to a stop, brake still held ithe it's fine. Minute you lift your foot off it drops to 500-700rpm then goes back up to idle rpm.

I also noticed the clutch pedal us either on or off and the accelerator is all or nothing and done times surges power.

Bump

Tried unplugging 2 things under bonnet. Left of engine the blue plug, by airbox another plug still happening.

If you're convinced its vacuum related , and it could well be, all I can suggest is that you check every vacuum pipe and connection you can find.
From past experience with a Vivaro van I had, vacuum leaks or blocked pipes can cause some strange symptoms.
The Vivaro had a plethora of vacuum pipes and various vacuum operated sensors on it relating to fuel and turbo function and, yes, it was a diesel. Nightmare !!
