I'd have gone for the battery as well - cars are never logical

It's been well documented here and elsewhere it's nearly always the starter on these engines, rather than the battery. The starters get gunged up, the pinions start to seize and they turn slowly. You *can* give your original starter more life buy dismantling and cleaning, but really the only solution is a new one.

Yes, battery was my inital thought, especially as it was very cold battery killing weather. I bet 99% of garages would have just put a new battery on. But, after taking battery readings over several days and trying a spare battery, plus wise advice on here about the starter, it all came together.

Sent quickly, arrived next day.

hi...just thought i would let people know i also bought this same starter motor for my 2004 2.0lt hdi. local garage fitted it as i was pressed for time.  they said the  physical length of the actual starter was a bit bigger and awkward to fit, they apparently had to grind the housing down a little to get correct fitment, and also as mentioned here they had to alter the wiring connections, and move fuel pipes/filters to get access,  but took them about an hour to complete.
berlingo now starts instantly...no hint of having to keep cranking the engine over to get it to start...looking at original bosch unit ID, the old one was only the 1.4kw starter, hence this new 1.8kw making a huge difference.    new starter arrived on time of estimated delivery.
