I have the shorter pipe back box on my van after the last rusted through.
Have found no obvious improvements on fuel consumption or power output.
I get 676 miles from 60 litres.
As the above link says... power loss is usually egr or clearance related.
Overall the 1.9d is a sedate drive, I have found not many improvements can be made

Yep......
Going to work early, no stop start driving and keeping the revs down, under 3000, gives a great return on this engine. Try to thrash it though and you wont get 40 mpg

I have to say that, 2 years on, I'm not so sure about any gain in speed or consumption. It still struggles to get to 40 mpg and acceleration is measured with a calendar rather than stopwatch
And yet the 'stately like a galleon' performance is a feature I've learned to enjoy. Put the armrests down, relax, watch and anticipate other road users actions, stick in lanes one and two and enjoy the radio.
OK a 200mile journey takes ten minutes longer than it does pushing my 110 HDi Xantia along at an indicated 80/90 in ideal conditions. But how often are conditions ideal and what state do you want to be in when you arrive?

I have to say having my berlingo van six months now I have noticed the poor fuel consumption, I have tried a few things but really struggle to get 38MPG, cleaned the EGR valve, a good service, and even the exhaust was replaced (due to rust and lots of holes) The first back box I got had the shorter pipe but returned it for proper one. I wouldnt mind if the power pushed me back into the seat but it doesnt. I now jump up and down and back and forward when approuching hills, it helps a little.

I find fuel economy especially on a long run, good. I have found the performance has improved as I have had it. I don't think it traveled very far or at any speed with the previous owners. A couple of longer runs has probably glazed the inside of the cylinders and improved compression.

More than likely it wad always drove too easy and it clogs itself up. Long runs burn off all that shite and cleans the particle filter. Gets it properly up to temperature
Correct !!! Glazing is caused by allowing the engine to tick over for extended periods of time and as you say, a long run with the engine up to temperature and with a good load on will encourage the crap to depart through the exhaust...
