Power Steering?
#1
Hello all in Berlingo World lol,
I have a 02 multispace 18D which is my first Berlingo so that in mind I wanted to ask a general question,
Is the power steering on these heavy or is my motor on its way out as when I turn the steering wheel when I'm standstill it's like there's No power steering at all as it doesn't even make the straining noises that some cars make when u hit full lock,

Now that said I can feel it does work a little when moving but only half a turn (180') after that it's really hard and I'm a big lad but even I struggle

Please all thoughts welcome,
Cheers, Phil  Big Grin

Hi Phil does not sound right mate but to find the problem may be a process of elimination it could be anything from collapsed strut bearings to a worn pump.

There a couple of things to try before you go replacing the pump. Have you jacked up the front to see if the steering turned freely?the steering knuckle is probably worth a look.also the lower ball joints can be worth a look.
And of course
the power steering fluid level. Good luck

Hiya Glastry,
I have checked the fluid level and that's still on max with no sight of any leaks but I've not had it jacked up yet to check it as I wanted to see if there were any common faults with this before hand so I know what to look for as I'm off work next week and going to get this sorted,

Really appreciate your help n advice

As mentioned, check the lower steering column joint, just where it pops out of the bulkhead behind the engine, mine was getting really hard to turn at times, reached down from the d/side wing and sprayed with WD and the effect was amazing, did that a few days,1400/1500 miles, then put some oil on,spot on now mate ....

Just came across this thread from a search. My '04 2.0HDi (M59) with 114k miles steering has occasional problems while driving that feels something like the Power Steering is not 100% working so sometimes it's a bit stiffer to turn than other times. It can happen when driving slowy or fast. There are no fluid leaks that I can see, and I replaced the fluid in the reservoir in case it was simply getting old. The new fluid makes some difference so maybe a flush of the system would help but if so how's best to do that?
How does the power steering get activated, is there a solenoid or something? I'll take a look at the steering column joint mentioned above just in case.
Thanks
