Talking of thieves. In bright daylight at the Brenner pass in Italy. They were just trying to open the passengers door, when I arrived back from the mall. When I confronted them, they were running. My friend said, I was absolutely crazy and anything could have happened.
I'm utterly naive, it seems. But then, who thinks of thiefes in bright daylight. I've fitted "Bosch auto alarm" stickers at the doors, maybe that helps....

Hi neuer, I also have one of those Pure Highway units so three questions.
1) How did you mount the unit as I've not been able to find anything suitable?
2) Are you using a screen mounted aerial and if so how far up the screen is it mounted?
3) How much DAB radio is available in Europe? I know coverage was very poor a few years ago and I've not even tried on my recent trips to France and Spain.
Thanks!

Hi dickl,
as a frequent holiday maker, I'll start with question 3. :-) I went southwest this year. Im Bavaria and generally in Germany DAB+ reception is extremely good with powerfull transmitters. 45 stations in Munich. Good reception everywhere, except for some places in the Bavarian forest but with considerable spill over into CZ and Austria.
Better than FM at most places... Almost the same in Switzerland, even more stations than in Germany somewhat weaker reception than in Germany, but that may be due to the mountains. In Austria and CZ, nothing, except for the German spill over. France, Portugal, Morocco, Spain, Andorra... Nothing as well. There is a 4 station bouquet from Gibraltar which i could receive at least 80km into Spain. Italy.. good reception at the adriatic sea east of Venice, but nothing like Germany or Switzerland.. a lot weaker... Same at the Brenner, where there are mainly German language stations.
The year before I went northeast... Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Lituiania, Latvia, Estonia, nothing.... Even in Finland I got no reception..
Around Stockholm there were quite a few stations but that was it... Reception started again in Germany.
I'm using a Wittenberg 16V antenna. Which claims to have a reception from 5-1000mhz and an inbuild 20db amplifier. I removed the original antenna any "square foot" antanna can be fitted instead... The Wittenberg has a F-socket, same as used for satellite TV, so i had to solder.. I've fitted a 3-way sat splitter for the highway, fm radio and the rtl-DVB-T (freeview) stick.
Mounting the unit was difficult. I used cable ties and super glue.. Look at the picture. Its a perfect fit at my left hand drive. I opened the Highway and solderd an antanna cable, power cable, and the audio outputs. No impedance matching was needed, direct connection to the antenna gives great reception.
At the Sylvenstein reservoir south of Tölz close to the Austrian border on B307 eastbound to Austrian B181, there's no FM, but my highway still working with a least 16 stations... :-). rtl freeview stick has no reception.. The mountain range is going west to east and the transmitter is in the north at a lower altitude, yet DAB+ works...

Thanks neuer, that's really useful So even if I had tried it in France and Spain it wouldn't have worked!
I'm not sure I have the skills to start rewiring the Highway so I think I'll have to stick with the screen mounted aerial. I was hoping you might have found a dedicated cradle. There is one supplied with the unit that sticks to the windscreen but with a sat-nav already there I don't want to clutter it any more than it is. I'll have another look on the internet in case I've missed something suitable.
If you ever come over here you'll find the DAB coverage is patchy. Very good in some areas and in others it will disappear for a few hundred metres then suddenly come back in (or at least that's my experience but maybe with a better aerial it might not be so bad)
Thanks again.

I have one of the fifteen quid sonichi magnetic aerials from halfords in my car (hooked up to a Pioneer single din DAB head unit). Was easy to fit. I just tucked the cable behind the trim and then routed it out of the top rear corner of the sliding door. It then sits on the roof and hasn't fallen off! Reception is very good.

You can buy an external Bluetooth GPS to use with an iPad.
Have seen them in the Transair Pilot Shop.
Good enough for Pilots to use their iPads as an in flight GPS.
