[Tires & Wheels] spare wheel

hi all, this might sound a stupid Q to all, but had a puncture yesterday(first in years of motoring)and had nothing to hand to lower the spare ???used the hook end of wheel brace in the end,but found it was slipping out of the slotted top end,am i missing some sort of proper tool to do this job ??? many thanks  GWYN

Hi GWYN, your doing nothing wrong mate, good old French design that requires a bit of adaptation. I use a peice of chamios leather on the spade end of the brace to help it sit in the slot.

No you are correct after years of research and testing on the best jack and wheel brace and many versions they threw all the evidence away and come up with that stupid idea. It grips just enough so when you think its going well it slips out takes your knuckles off.

I usually just use an adjustable spanner as on mine the bit with the slot in it also has flats on the sides.

I was ages looking to that tool thinking that stupid thing can't be it,anyway was waste of time because it was rusted solid !! Hour later I had to jack the spear up to get the tension off,that's how I do it now,so I carry a trolley jack to,

Clean and grease the threads for any future use .... but you knew that anyway .......

A 1/2" extension and a ratchet is far better being square in the first place and it's about the right size
