[Engine] Intermiitent misfire with accompanying smoke

I might have found the problem. The MAF connector didn't seem to be fully engaged and took a heavy bit of pressure to make it seat correctly. That was two days ago, since which it's driving great again (but then it sometimes did anyway!). I've also filled up with diesel today and added some snake oil, sorry, injector cleaner so either way I'm hoping it's all sorted now.

I had a similar problem, but mine turned out to have a different cause. The harness connector wires for the advance actuator solenoid had been grazed off some insulation and the bare wires would come into contact and it result in plumes of smoke and engine going lumpy. A little insulation tape did as a temporary measure.

Thanks for the additional suggestion Civvic. It's running great at the moment (apart from a failing power steering pump) so I will keep that one in mind if the misfire returns - but so far so good.
