how do you check if  your timeing belt needs changed
on berlingo diesel 2002
is it a big job to check

Do you know when it was last replaced? its easy to look at the belt once the cover is off but that can be no guarantee that its ok. Go on mileage covered and how many years if unsure best to play safe and change it along with waterpump.

good advice above,buy the timing belt pulleys and all- and clean the bottom pulley (the one that you are not replacing),
they can and do clog up and are a worthwhile clean up.
